Carl Block Pottery Rooster Texas

Texas Potter Carl Block has a true unique style for contemporary southern pottery. Color and creativity truly are two things that most definitely apply to his style. Much of Carl's embracing of color, is based upon childhood trips he took into Mexico with his family, where he witnessed this same tradition in Mexican folk art. Carl is particularly famous for his face jugs and most famous for his Adam & Eve versions. He is known for his congeniality with his fellow southern potter community. Most modern works that NCPottery.com offers are from the Carolinas or GA, therefore it is a pleasure to be able to offer pieces from other notable southern potters. He has been active in Texas for about 30 years.

This rooster, titled 'Skillet', is a grand example of a figural by Carl. The piece was purchased from him in the early 2000's by the original collector, from whom NCPottery.com obtained it. Carl also incorporates the tradition of adding the candelabra aspect (i.e. 3 are added to this rooster), at times done on face jugs and even roosters. Every applied/attached part of the rooster is a different color, and then has a different painted design. This style by Carl blends the best of the traditional folk art painter with the craft of a master potter. The rooster stands 12″ tall by 12.5″ in body length. Carl signs his last name, actually apply or emboss it, on the base edge. Mint condition. $30 s/i.
