Caroleen Sanders Pottery Catawba Indian Head Pipe
Caroleen (Carole) Sanders created this beautifully carved head pipe in 2015. This is likely of an ancestor, maybe former chief of the Nation. Her works include traditional figures such as her snake bowls & swans, pipes, and head wallpockets more recently.
Carole's mother created a limited number of pieces in the Catawba tradition and Caroleen is also the niece of the late Earl Robbins. Uncle Earl, as she always describes him, there is something very inspiring and powerful when she talks about him. And the spirit of the Catawba comes through so powerfully when she speaks of her ancestors. Not only being an incredible person, she is also active in the promotion of the Catawba pottery tradition, and in the past was on the Board of the NC Pottery Center. This carved head pipe is coil-formed, carefully burnished with family rubbing stones, and then pit-fired piece. The pipe stands 3″ by 3″ max length. Mint condition. $10 s/i.
