Walter Fleming Pottery Monkey Jug NC

This is a Walter Fleming Double Chamber Monkey Jug in his original dark alkaline glaze. Walter learned a few things early on from Burlon, but pretty much is a self-taught Catawba Valley potter. He is a retired Presbyterian minister and has his pottery shop in Statesville, NC. Another interesting fact about Walter is that he turns his pots (i.e. including swirl), due to being left-handed and it was logical to him, counter-clockwise. This is not true of all southpaw potters. A monkey jug was traditional made very likely as a tourist piece or whimsy. A number of years ago, I went to visit Walter and he kindly showed me his private collection. I noted on a number of his personal collection pieces, this awesome dark black glaze. And I asked him to resurrect the use of this glaze on several pieces. It wasn't necessarily me that only encouraged him to do this, but post these pieces he turned/glazed for me, it started showing up a bit more on his wares. A similar example of this example to this dark glazed monkey jug I commissioned. And I was happy to find one to be able offer on ncpottery.com. Also there is a nice contrasting golden glass run decoration he adds. The jug stands 11″ tall by 7″ max width. Signed with hand script base on the base (i.e. vs his script signed stamped). Mint condition. $18 s/i.
