Walter Fleming Pottery Face Jug NC

Walter Fleming Pottery Face Jug NC

This is a Walter Fleming 2 Handle Face Jug, made in the 2000s. Walter learned a few things early on from Burlon, but pretty much is a self-taught Catawba Valley potter. He is a retired Presbyterian minister and has his pottery shop in Statesville, NC. Another interesting fact about Walter is that he turns his pots (i.e. including swirl), due to being left-handed and it was logical to him, counter-clockwise. This is not true of all southpaw potters. No doubt this face jug is very nice piece of southern folk pottery. He employs china teeth, and the classic CV incised sine wave & line decoration on the shoulder. Also, there are additional face wave patterns. The glaze is Walter's ash glaze, but I will also include in the overall alkaline glaze tradition (hence in the listing alkaline option on ncpottery.com). The jug stands 12.5″ tall by 9.5″ max width. Signed in his script stamp on base. Mint condition. $30 s/i.
