Roger Hicks Pottery Face Jug Jar Lenoir NC
Roger Hicks is a very accomplished potter of the Catawba Valley and lives in Lenoir, NC. He also happens to be blind, but he created his masterpieces of folk art, employing his other senses. Recently due to arthritis, Roger has not turned pottery for several years. Great person and amazing artist. This is early face jar by him from 1990's, with a dark alkaline glaze. You wouldn't know this face jug was turned and created by a blind person. And it really has no relevance for that matter. The southern folkiness nature of the piece can be seen in the px. Wonderful applied strap handles as lug handles, and the china teeth give a somewhat vampiric appearance to the face. The face jar stands 8.5″ tall with a max width of 8″. The piece is definitely made by Roger, but potters at times forget to sign their works. Please refer to the Dec 2012 new book, Valley Ablaze: Pottery Tradition in the Catawba Valley, for comparable pieces by Roger. Mint condition. $18 s/i.
