Here is a top notch Steve Abee Swirl Snake Jug, made in about 2009. Steve has his shop in the north end of the Catawba Valley in Lenoir, NC. This piece was one of the first buys at the Hickory Fest, that year after the doors opened on Fri night. The combination of all the best aspects of a contemporary CV pot are brought forth in this jug. The swirl is a very tight combo of alkaline glazed and likely white kaolin clays. Steve creates his traditional snake in which he pinches segmentations to make the snake scales, and he perfectly sizes the snake for the face because the size is a tad smaller than the standard 1 G. And the mouth is wide open, as was his style for a number of years, but in the face he splits the mouth to add balance with the snake (i.e. they are parallel or at same angle direction). He adds other incised decorations, a triple thumb pressed handle base, and again, I am always a softie collector for lots of ‘quartz’ (and this glaze is chock full of them). The face stands 8” tall by 8” max width. Signed on base. Mint condition. $20 s/i.
